Interpretation and result

step 5
Interpretation and result
The X-rays will be assessed by 2 radiologists. They do this independently of each other. Radiologists specialise in detecting anomalies on X-rays. An anomaly could be the start of breast cancer. If you have previously participated in a breast screening, the radiologist will compare the new images with the old ones.

The result

We will send you the result by letter within 10 working days. The following results are possible:

  • No anomalies found
No indications for breast cancer were found on the X-rays. You can participate in the breast screening again in 2 years. The screening does not guarantee complete certainty. There is a chance that breast cancer has not been detected. Breast cancer can also start to develop between one screening and the next. If you have any breast complaints please make an appointment with your GP.
  • Insufficient information
The X-rays do not provide sufficient information for correct interpretation. Further screening is required at the hospital. This screening could entail further X-rays or an ultrasound scan. In most cases everything is fine. Of every 10 women who receive this result, around 9 women do not have breast cancer.
  • An anomaly has been detected
An anomaly has been detected on the X-ray that could indicate breast cancer. Further screening is required at the hospital. This could be an X-ray or an ultrasound scan. In most cases a small tissue sample will be removed from the breast. This still does not need to mean that you have breast cancer. Of every 10 women who receive this result, around 5 women do not have breast cancer.

Frequently asked questions

If something suspicious is seen on the images, your GP will contact you. This does not mean that you have breast cancer. Further screening is required at a hospital.
