It is important that patients are prepared as well as possible for the follow-up consultation. The updated NHG Breast Cancer Standard was published in December 2016. This includes the new referral route for women who received a BI-RADS 0 result during the breast screening.
BI-RADS 0 result
If a patient has a BI-RADS 0 result, this means that insufficient information is available to interpret the X-rays correctly. Women with a BI-RADS 0 result must undergo further diagnostic imaging as quickly as possible so that they receive clarity about the result. The aim is to reduce anxiety and concern as far as possible.
- BI-RADS 0 result: Referral to the Radiology department at a hospital that also has a Breast Screening Clinic
- BI-RADS 4/5 result: Referral to the Breast Screening Clinic at a hospital
