Referral route

It is important that patients are prepared as well as possible for the follow-up consultation. The updated NHG Breast Cancer Standard was published in December 2016. This includes the new referral route for women who received a BI-RADS 0 result during the breast screening.

BI-RADS 0 result

If a patient has a BI-RADS 0 result, this means that insufficient information is available to interpret the X-rays correctly. Women with a BI-RADS 0 result must undergo further diagnostic imaging as quickly as possible so that they receive clarity about the result. The aim is to reduce anxiety and concern as far as possible.

Referral routes

    • BI-RADS 0 result: Referral to the Radiology department at a hospital that also has a Breast Screening Clinic
    • BI-RADS 4/5 result: Referral to the Breast Screening Clinic at a hospital
